The Disinformation Project is not objective

By Ashley Church

In 1949, in his dystopian novel ‘1984’, George Orwell coined the term ‘Thoughtcrime’ to describe the holding of political views which were at odds with what the Government considered acceptable.

He could have been describing the political climate in New Zealand in 2022 under the yoke of the emerging totalitarianism of Jacinda Ardern and her fellow travelers at the ironically named ‘Disinformation Project’ which (in an eerie echo of Ardern’s alarming recent UN speech) has claimed that some views constitute ‘misinformation’ and should be censored.

Here’s why this should concern you. Democracy, by definition, is a contest of ideas. Indeed, the essence of democracy is the constant tension between opposing viewpoints and worldviews and the ability of the people to decide which view best matches their own aspirations at any given time.

Contrast this with the approach of the Disinformation Project which claims, not just that there is an objective ‘truth’ against which all other ideas must be measured, but that they, alone, are able to define this truth.

By their definition, what we would traditionally have referred to as ‘opinions’ would now be classified as disinformation if they didn’t align with the approved narrative.

I’m sure I don’t need to alert you to the historical consequences when such an approach has been taken in the past.

ALL political discourse is ultimately opinion, and the claim that only one political worldview can be accepted is the mark of a tyrant.

Yes, such an approach means that extreme viewpoints can participate in the contest of ideas – but people are generally smart enough to discard these for themselves rather than needing to be told what they can and can’t believe.

Alt:Right extremists can claim that there were tracking devices in the Covid vaccines, but most of us dismiss these claims as nutty.

Alt:Left extremists can claim that a woman is a man just because she ‘feels’ like a man – but most of us have a basic understanding of biology and see this for the nonsense that it is.

This isn’t just an academic debate. Left leaning media organisation Stuff already references the Disinformation Project as an ‘authority’ in its stories and Ardern has already claimed to be the ‘single source of truth’ during Covid (a position that was laughable as her ‘truth’ kept changing). Add to this her attempts to convince the UN that heavy censorship of opposing viewpoints should be supported and you start to see the dark clouds gathering.

Let’s be clear.

The Disinformation Project is not objective.

It is a left wing think tank with a specific agenda and bias masquerading as an impartial authority and its endorsement of attempts to oppress free speech is dangerous to a civilised society and ultimately, to our way of life….
