The attempted suicide drone attack came on the anniversary of the death of Qassem Soleimani – Iran’s former Quds Force Commander and General of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

According to several reports, a pair of suicide drones were heading in the direction of the Baghdad International Airport on Monday – more specifically, the military base housing US troops – but were shot down before impact. It is believed that Iranian proxy militias in the region are responsible for the attack, which has often been the case.

Assuming Tehran’s involvement in the attack is all the more reasonable due to the fact that Monday marked the anniversary of the death of former IRGC Commander Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) strike two years ago outside of the Baghdad International Airport. The strike on Soleimani came at the command of then-President Donald Trump.

Furthermore, upon locating the fallen drones, both contained markings of “revenge.” One of them reportedly had the words “Soleimani’s revenge” painted on it.

Sources state that Monday’s attack resulted in no injuries or casualties. Regardless, a spokesperson for the US-led military coalition voiced concern over the attack, which targeted a civilian area.
