In New Zealand, as in many other countries, there has been a dramatic increase over recent years in referrals of young people for puberty-blockers and other medical interventions to treat gender dysphoria. This increase has occurred in a wider social and educational environment in which new concepts around sex and gender have been introduced.

Dr Michael Biggs is a New Zealander who is Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Oxford. He has an international reputation as an expert in the areas of social movements and gender theory.

His work on puberty blockers and gender medicine was used in the recent review of the Tavistock Gender Identity Development Service in the United Kingdom.
