By Graeme Williams, Groundswell (Foreword by Mel Taylor)
This clever poem, written by East Coast farmer Graeme Williams was a hit on The Country radio show yesterday. It has a very serious message behind it, the decimation of our unique hill country farms & communities through heavy-handed methane tax and escalating carbon prices.
Strangely – the poem can no longer be found online … so we thought we would publish it for you to enjoy:
HE WAKA EKE NOA………
He Waka Eke Noa
Jacinda’s carbon sink
Epitomises her policies
Heaps of noise and little think
‘We’re in the Waka together’ she says
Cuddle up and all be nice
More like stick it up the sheep, beef and deer farmers
Who will disproportionally pay the price.
Jacinda is the wolf I sense
Dresses as little Red Riding Hood
Silencing all the lambs it seems
Whilist covering all our farms in wood
“I’ll be the toast of the United Nations
Indeed it is my goal”
“I’ll simply turn my blind eye
As China ramps up burning coal.”
Charity begins at home I think
It’s where her focus ought to be
The world is sure to starve to death
Before it’s gobbled up by the sea
The more extensive sheep and beef farms
Are sustainability personified
Steering the Waka as if she’s Noah
Whilst we get crucified.
The likes of Huiarua and Matanui
What an absolute total disgrace
O’Connor, Nash and Allan
Wrong tree…..Wrong….Bloody….place
I don’t know how they sleep at night
As a pack it’s how it goes
Indeed they too are wolves
Dressed up in Granny’s clothes.
Dan Carson’s telling porkies
With the figures that he quotes
Bob Pitaway won the farmer of the year
The Station nationally noted
Check out the Bayleys real estate promo
One of the best New Zealand stations you’ll find
Carson’s dancing to Jacinda’s tune
The general public’s running blind.
Carson was previously respected
But certainly no longer by me
How can he be an authority
On farmland he’s yet to see?
Like He Waka Eke Noa
He hasn’t got it right
We need to back Jane and Kerry
And front up for this fight.
We’re the only country in the world
That have a methane tax
Carson and his cronies
Should replace opinion with hard core facts
America they had Johnny Cash,
Bob Hope and Stevie Wonder
Us…..Jacinda and Stuart Nash
No hope…..and no bloody wonder.
So come on all you Kiwis
Who follow common sense
It’s time to take a stand
And stop sitting on the fence
He Waka Eke Noa
in its current form’s a mistake
For the future of our industry
A united stand we all must take.
