A Night with a Lone Star

By Leao Tildsley.

The atmosphere was buzzing as I walked into Lone Star, New Lynn.

You could feel it in the air, something you couldn’t pay thousands for. Although I came with a purpose to interview and take photos, tonight I witnessed an extraordinary event that the history books will write about in years to come.

People came with their families. Smiling, laughing, waving to strangers. We were stepping into 2018 again, even if it were just a moment, with families and friends engaging with each other. No phones being used for social self-extraction but rather snapshots of memories, toothy smiles, big plates and shared laughter, pain, unity.

I felt an overwhelming sense of normality and community that people have dearly longed for.

The fear-mongering that has been whirling around New Zealand and the world was left outside of the community filling both inside and outside of the restaurant.

And to the couple set to lose everything for publicly refusing to obey the government discrimination mandates, an atmosphere of unity and bravery was solidified, transcending any funded construction of pseudo-awe experienced in other eateries.

The song to the owners Brendan and Stephanie, “Lean on Me” was sung by those who came to support.

And finally, an incredible haka, here is some of the translation of part of the haka “Behold the might of our women, Behold the strength of our men and our young people, Stand tall and proud, yes we agree, stand tall and proud” an honouring to them and to the releasing of Brian Tamaki from prison for his imprisonment and his stand for all New Zealanders.

We are living in exciting times and you do not want to miss out on this amazing adventure.

Be on the right side of history.

This will not be the last time you will hear from this incredible couple. In fact, I have a feeling that this is only the beginning.

They have not only walked their talk but embodied the very mantra of Lone Star:

“Be Staunch, Walk Tall”
