Pakistan: India is planning imminent military strike

Pakistan claims it has “reliable intelligence” suggesting India is preparing an imminent military strike, heightening tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours a week after a deadly attack in Kashmir.

On Wednesday, Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated that India might launch an attack within the next 24 to 36 hours.

India has accused Pakistan of supporting the 22 April attack in Pahalgam, a town in Indian-controlled Kashmir, which Pakistan firmly denies.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged to hunt down the attackers “to the ends of the earth”.

His party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), posted on X on Wednesday, declaring India’s “zero tolerance for terrorism”.

“Modi has given Indian forces full authority to respond decisively after the brutal Pahalgam terror attack,” the BJP added.

Following the attack, New Delhi scrapped a vital water-sharing agreement, which Islamabad labelled “unlawful”. India also ordered all Pakistani nationals to leave its territory.

Both nations have banned each other’s aircraft from their airspace.

Tensions are at their highest since 2019, when India launched military strikes in Pakistan after an insurgent attack in India-administered Kashmir.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in separate calls with both countries, urged them to avoid actions that could lead to “tragic consequences”.
